The Epson 8700UB LCD Projector is a powerful, fourth generation 1080p projector, built for home cinema in a light-controlled environment. It features industry-leading signal processing technologies that include 12 bit chip driver technology and dual video processors. The cost of the projector is not prohibitive and comes with a spare lamp included in the price. Here is a look at its features:
Thanks to Epson’s latest D7 3-chip 1080p LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) imaging engine, the projector, reacts fast to the on-screen content. This happens silently and without a huge delay common in lesser projectors.
The projector has individual LCD chips for each of the primary colors. The use of UltraBlack technology along with the latest dual-layer Auto Iris system provide an improved dynamic contrast ratio of 200,000:1, providing brighter whites and darker blacks.
The Epson 8700UB LCD projector utilizes the exclusive Cinema Filter technology by Epson. This feature allows the projector to mimic a theatre projector with its unique, multi-layer optically coated glass panel that when activated, tames the spikes in the spectrum and expands the color gamut.
The filter is activated into position when any of the following picture modes is selected: THX Movie Mode, Theater, Theater Black 1, Theater Black 2 and x.v.Color.
With a 200W E-TORL (Epson-Twin Optimized Reflective Technology) high output lamp, the projector has an increased accuracy, minimizing stray light and improving light output uniformity with increased contrast across the entire screen. The lamp provides maximum brightness of 1,600 lumens, with a low power consumption and extended lamp life.
Epson UltraBlack technology that is used in this projector generates a dynamic contrast ratio of 200,000:1, by dimming the lamp output depending on what is on the screen, which is an improvement of 267% when compared with the older models. This technology allows the system to put out special rays of blackness to improve the image’s ability to portray contrast.
When viewing fast motion images such as sports on the Epson 8700UB LCD projector, they appear clearer, sharper and more precisely defined. This is achieved through the use of the FineFrame Technology.
The FineFrame Technology is a 120 Hz FineFrame Interpolation system that improves motion sharpness and reduces motion smear by deriving intermediate frames from prior and following frames.
In this projector the chip driver has been increased from 10 bits (1,024 levels – 1.07 billion colors) to 12 bits (4,096 levels – 68.72 billion colors). The increased bit rate improves the banishing of gradation and banding artifacts, providing a smooth, natural color palette.
The Epson 8700UB LCD projector has a 96 Hz 4:4 pull-down function for 24p Blue-ray movies output. The pull-down function keeps the original film frames intact while displaying the frames with a fast 4X refresh rate by creating three new intermediate frames between each film frame. The projector comes with Epson’s 2 year warranty. This is a high quality product with a great price tag.
